Default NPD's Top 10 Selling Games of 2009 List Topped by Call of Duty

Despite launching in mid-November (November 10, to be exact), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360 is the best selling game of the year, according to new figures released by the NPD Group. As the November NPD figures revealed, the 360 version alone sold an astonishing 4.2 million units, with the PS3 version posting a very solid 1.87 million. NPD provided IndustryGamers with a list of the ten best selling games of 2009, with the list being largely dominated by the usual suspects -- primarily, Nintendo games.
  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360) -- 4,200,000
  2. Wii Fit w/ balance board (Wii) -- 3,500,000
  3. Wii Sports Resort w/ MotionPlus (Wii) -- 2,400,000
  4. Mario Kart Wii w/ wheel (Wii) -- 2,200,000
  5. Wii Play w/ remote (Wii) -- 2,100,000
  6. Halo 3: ODST (Xbox 360) -- 2,000,000
  7. Pokemon Platinum (DS) -- 1,900,000
  8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)-- 1,900,000
  9. Madden NFL 10 (Xbox 360) -- 1,500,000New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii) -- 1,400,000
It's difficult to overstate how incredible it is that Modern Warfare 2 is leading the entire year with not even a full month's worth of sales in the books. Suffice it to say, it's an immensely impressive accomplishment that Activision is sure to be pleased with. (And so much for Reggie's guarantee.)
Having seen the sales figures each month, the rest of the list won't come as much of a shock, and yet it's still hard not to be taken aback by the fact that the second best selling game of the year is a $100 product. While December's sales figures will likely switch up the list somewhat (expect both New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Modern Warfare 2 on PS3 to climb a few spots each), this list remains a fairly accurate indication of what will ultimately go down as the biggest games in 2009.
